The Oswestry Old Racecourse is a popular location for family photos. It has everything you need, lots of open spaces, beautiful colours and shade where you need it. It get transformed by the seasons throughout the year. The Bluebells in spring are a popular staple for the locals to come visit.
History of the area.
It is situated 1000ft on the Welsh/English border, with amazing views of the East and West. There are 22 hectares of countryside to wander around. There is a figure of 8 route that you can walk around following the old horse racing track.
Expansive open space with informal and public footpath network. Access for horse riders. Offa’s Dyke National Trail crosses common. Picnic area; seats situated at various location. There are no toilets, which is the only downside.
Parking
There is free parking, but get there early on the weekends as it is a popular spot for dog walkers.
Directions
Directions are super easy: Take the B4580, signposted Llansilin from Oswestry town centre and follow the road out of the town and up the steep hill for about 2 miles. At the crest of the hill follow the signs to Racecourse Common. Grid reference: SJ259 300 The postcode is SY10 7HL
Wildlife
I must admit, I see more dogs than birds, but I have spotted some birds I would not normally see in my backyard. Remember to take your binoculars. I also take my British birds book, helping you identify that tweets.
